Diathesis itself is not a disease. But this is a complex and dangerous symptom that signals that not everything is in order in the baby’s body.
Diathesis in infants can lead to unpleasant health problems and the development of chronic diseases. Therefore, it is extremely important for parents to respond in a timely manner to the condition of their baby and take action. After all, diathesis can contribute to the occurrence of such unpleasant diseases as dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis or neurodermatitis.
Diathesis and its types
Outwardly, diathesis is manifested by reddening of the baby’s cheeks. This is a sure signal that something is going wrong in the baby’s body. Diathesis in infants can manifest itself as follows:
- nervous disorders;
- problems with glands and lymph;
- skin diseases.
Nervous-arthritic diathesis is a hereditary disease. It occurs due to improper removal of uric acid breakdown products from the child’s body.
Lymphatic-hypoplastic diathesis is accompanied by the following symptoms: enlarged lymph nodes and thymus gland, disruption of the endocrine system, allergies, frequent colds. This type of diathesis in infants develops due to infectious diseases that occurred during the mother’s pregnancy and were accompanied by complications.
Exudative catarrhal diathesis (ECD) is the most common type of diathesis. The main symptoms of ECD are redness of the skin, inflammation and sensitivity of the mucous membranes (conjunctivitis, laryngitis, rhinopharyngitis), decreased immunity, and, as a result, frequent colds. Despite proper care, the child may develop diaper rash. Seborrhea is often observed on the head. The face is puffy, pale, on the cheeks there is a bright red crust – a milky scab.
The cause of diathesis may be a hereditary predisposition to it, as well as errors in the nutrition of the baby. In newborns under the age of one month, the cause of diathesis may be the mother’s malnutrition during pregnancy. A woman in an interesting position needs to remember that shortcomings in her diet can lead to abnormal development of the fetus and to the occurrence of diathesis in the newborn. Summarizing, the causes of diathesis in infants may be as follows:
- toxicosis lasting the entire duration of pregnancy;
- hereditary factor;
- excessive and uncontrolled use of drugs during pregnancy;
- improper diet of the expectant mother, as well as improper nutrition of the child in the first months of life;
- lack of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients;
- eating foods that can cause an allergic reaction – honey, chocolate, coffee, caviar, citrus fruits and others, both during pregnancy and during breastfeeding;
- poor ecological situation in the region of residence.
Diagnosis of diathesis is carried out on the basis of symptoms, examination of the child and a survey of his mother. If necessary, a laboratory study can be carried out.
In the treatment of diathesis, the main role is played by properly selected baby food. It will be good if the pediatrician helps to make a diet, taking into account the individual characteristics of the baby’s body. It is necessary to control the amount of sugar in artificial nutrition, since its excess can cause a fermentation process in the body, indigestion, a rash, as a result of which the child will become nervous and restless. Proper nutrition is the basis on which the health of the baby is laid for many years.
It is well known that breastfeeding is ideal for a child. The body of each baby is individual, so there can be no unambiguous answer to the question of when it is possible to introduce complementary foods. But on average, pediatricians are of the opinion that complementary foods should not be introduced before 6 months. On the recommendation of a doctor, you can try to introduce cereals, juices, egg yolks, vegetable purees even earlier than this period, but always in small portions, one new product at a time, and carefully observe the child’s reaction. If the baby has diathesis, diarrhea, constipation, or any other negative reaction to the introduction of a new product, it should be discarded until the child’s body is ready.
It is also worth paying attention to the diet of a nursing mother. Her menu should not include fried, spicy, spicy, etc. In addition, all foods that can cause allergic reactions in the baby should be excluded.
Care for the affected areas of the skin can be carried out with both medication and folk remedies. In no case should you uncontrollably apply numerous ointments, creams and gels for children, which are now sold in large quantities in pharmacies. Treatment of diathesis in infants is a purely individual process, so you can not do without the help of a qualified specialist.
Prevention of diathesis in infants is the proper nutrition of the baby, as well as the mother during pregnancy and during breastfeeding. If a breastfeeding woman adheres to a proper diet, then breastfeeding is the best prevention.
