Most often, infection of the eyes of a newborn occurs during childbirth, when the fetus passes through the birth canal. In order to prevent infection, for prevention, in the first hours of life, albucid or sodium sulfacyl is dripped into his eyes. It happens that this is not enough. After a few days of staying at home, the child has suppuration in the eyes. Also, the cause of purulent discharge from the eyes of the baby may lie in the following diseases:

  1. Conjunctivitis. This is the most common reason. The disease is manifested by redness, swelling of the conjunctiva. A slight increase in temperature is possible. The development of conjunctivitis can occur as a result of the influence of adenoviruses, staphylococci, streptococci on the body of the baby.

  2. Dacryocystitis. This is a blockage of the tear duct, which is not uncommon in newborns. If the protective film is not torn, a cork is formed and the development of the infectious process begins. The disease is manifested by lacrimation, swelling. If you press on the inner corner of the eye, then purulent contents are released.

  3. Allergic reaction, which is manifested by swelling, fear of light, tearing, purulent discharge from the eyes. In infants, there is a general deterioration in well-being. Usually, an allergy in a newborn is manifested by dust, animal hair, and detergents.

  4. Any infectious processes of the body. SARS, herpes, measles can lead to eye disease in a newborn, since his eyes are considered the most susceptible place for infection.
